Introduction

Built heritage is an invaluable cultural legacy. Being an important component of culture, it sustains cultural identity and fosters the sense of belonging of a community.

The Greater Bay Area (GBA) covers the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macao Special Administrative Region, and 9 cities in the Guangdong Province, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, Zhaoqing. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region this year, the Commissioner for Heritage’s Office and the Antiquities and Monuments Office under the Development Bureau, jointly organise the Greater Bay Area Built Heritage Summit at the Hong Kong City Hall on 9 – 10 November, 2022 (Wednesday to Thursday). Attended by around 30 experts and scholars on built heritage conservation, the Summit is a focal point for sharing of professional experiences and innovations, as well as exploration of the way forward.

The four key topics of the Summit include:

(1) New Development in Built Heritage Conservation and Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings
(2) Knowledge Sharing & Public Engagement: New Strategies in Built Heritage Education
(3) Application of New Technologies in Built Heritage Conservation and Education
(4) Cross-Boundary Collaborations

The GBA Built Heritage Summit is exclusively sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club, and supported by the Antiquities Advisory Board and Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation. It is of particular significance to hold the Summit at the Hong Kong City Hall, a monument newly declared in 2022.

We hope the Summit will help bring us a leap forward in built heritage conservation by generating new insights in monument preservation and revitalisation, technological applications, built heritage education and cross-boundary collaborations.
